Q: How often should you flush your water heater?

A: Once a year is recommended or twice a year or more if you have hard water.

The minerals in water have a tendency to build up on the heating elements of your water heater (the heat solidifies the calcium carbonate) causing premature failure (due to corrosion) and reduced efficiency (causing a higher electric/gas bill). According to the Department of Energy, “Water heating is the second largest energy expense in your home, accounting for about 18% of your utility bill.”
Regular flushing helps to clear the built up calcium and other minerals from the bottom of the heater. If you have haven’t had a cleaning in a while, you should look to have your water heater descaled.
Water heater flushes (as well as checks of the unit and pressure relief valve) are performed semi-annually in all of our Home Hero HomeCare maintenance plans. Learn more about our plans here.
